Sahara Group expands recycling drive with two new hubs in Lagos
Sahara Group Foundation has commissioned two new Sahara Go Recycling Hubs in Ojodu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State, expanding community access to sustainable waste management and environmental sustainability initiatives.
The new facilities, inaugurated in Ojodu, are the 18th and 19th recycling hubs established under the Sahara Go Recycling Initiative, a programme designed to promote responsible waste disposal, increase recycling and create income opportunities for residents.
The initiative, driven by Sahara Group Foundation — the social impact arm of Sahara Group — focuses on diverting recyclable waste from landfills while supporting waste-to-wealth opportunities for households and local communities.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the Director of Sahara Group Foundation, Ms Chidilim Menakaya, said the project reflected the organisation’s commitment to practical and community-driven solutions with long-term environmental and economic benefits.
“The commissioning of these Sahara Go Recycling Hubs in Ojodu reflects our commitment to creating sustainable ecosystems that empower communities,” Menakaya said.
“By bringing structured recycling solutions closer to residents, we are not only promoting environmental responsibility but also creating opportunities for households to derive economic value from recycling activities.”
She added that the initiative was also helping to strengthen local resilience, support livelihoods and encourage inclusive development through what she described as “EXTRApreneurship.”
The event attracted representatives of Sahara Group and Sahara Group Foundation, officials of Ojodu LCDA, community leaders, residents, volunteers and development partners.
Representing the Executive Chairman of Ojodu LCDA, Mr David Olusegun Odunmbaku, the Chief of Staff, Mr Olaide Bello, commended Sahara Group Foundation for supporting environmental sustainability in the community.
According to Bello, the recycling hubs align with the council’s development priorities by turning waste into economic value while promoting cleaner and healthier communities.
“This Recycling Hub is both timely and impactful for the people of Ojodu LCDA because of its strategic location within the community,” he said.
“The initiative supports climate action, reduces environmental pollution and creates livelihood opportunities for residents. It is a practical example of how communities can drive environmental responsibility and inclusive economic growth.”
Menakaya said the Sahara Go Recycling Initiative continued to demonstrate the impact of collaboration, innovation and community participation in building cleaner and more resilient societies.
Since its launch, the initiative has facilitated the recycling of more than 1,000 tonnes of recyclable materials across Lagos while directly and indirectly supporting over 2,000 livelihoods through collection, sorting, logistics and community enterprise opportunities.
According to the Foundation, the initiative has also helped to improve environmental awareness, encourage sustainable lifestyles and reshape public perception about recycling in underserved communities.
Sahara Group Foundation said it would continue to expand the Sahara Go Recycling Initiative across Lagos and other parts of the country in line with its commitment to building sustainable communities through social impact and entrepreneurship.
