As part of activities to mark this year’s Literacy Day, Heirs Energies has highlighted contributions to learning ensuring that young Nigerians get the required education as well as training the trainers.

In a statement by the Assistant Vice President, External Relations and Corporate Communications, Heirs Energies Limited, Chidimma Ugbojiaku, the company said: “Today, as the world marks International Literacy Day 2026 under the theme, “Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity,” Heirs Energies is proud to share the measurable impact of our investment in foundational learning.

In the statement entitled “International Literacy Day: From Access to Opportunity, the company stated that in September 2025, Heirs Energies partnered with the World Literacy Foundation to launch the Sun Books Digital Literacy Initiative across two public primary schools in our host communities in Rivers State.

Following nine months of structured delivery, the initiative has:

• Supported more than 500 learners
• Trained 27 teachers in literacy instruction, classroom management and assessment
• Expanded access to offline-first, curriculum-aligned digital learning
• Established solar-powered learning infrastructure to support continued access

The results have been encouraging. At the start of the programme, fewer than half of the assessed pupils achieved the minimum literacy benchmark. By the end, nearly nine in every ten pupils had met that benchmark – 87% at Central State Primary School, Igwuruta, and 86% at State Primary School, Umuebulu.

These outcomes demonstrate what is possible when technology, teacher capacity development and sustainable infrastructure are brought together with a clear commitment to improving learning.

As we commemorate International Literacy Day, we reaffirm our commitment to investing in initiatives that expand access to quality education, strengthen our host communities and equip the next generation with the knowledge and confidence to shape Africa’s fu ture.
