NISO, NBET strengthen collaboration for a more efficient electricity market

Abuja, Aug 2026(TBL Africa) The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) says it is strengthening collaboration with the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading (NBET) to improve electricity market operations in the country.

The Managing Director of NISO, Mr Abdu Mohammed, said in Abuja on Tuesday that the collaboration was to foster a more efficient, transparent and investor-friendly electricity market.

Mohammed said that that both agencies had intertwined responsibility to make the electricity market efficient and attractive to investors.

According to him, the overall objective of the two agencies is to ensure stable and reliable power supply to Nigerians.

He said that NISO was open to collaborating with NBET and other stakeholders to holistically address the challenges of liquidity in the sector.

“Our organisation and NBET share a lot in common; while we manage the service aspect of the electricity market, you manage the energy.

”Historically, NISO and NBET have always worked in synergy, so what we need now is to improve on that under the new leadership,” he said.

Mohammed said that the goal of establishing both agencies was to ensure that Nigerians enjoy stable power supply.

”The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe is someone with great vision and an open mind.

“We owe him and indeed Nigerians the obligation to unite under his leadership to share ideas and address the challenges in the sector,” he said.

Muhammed described NBET as a prime agency that is well positioned to have an inseparable responsibility with NISO,

“I assure you that we will work together to ensure that the common goals of the Electricity Act 2023 reforms are achieved under this administration,” he said.

The Managing Director of NBET, Mr Akinola Odeyemi commended NISO for what it is doing to stabilise and improve the electricity market.

Odeyemi said that his organisation would continue to work with NISO to ensure that the gains already recorded are not only sustained but improved upon.

“Upon my appointment, I thought it wise to visit and familiarise myself with sister agencies to see areas where we can work more closely to achieve our overall mandates.

“We are here to discuss further collaboration on market settlement, revenue alliance, coordination, and the overall strategies to improve the electricity market,” he said.

Odeyemi said that under his leadership, NBET would continue to maintain a robust relationship with NISO and other agencies in the sector.

He said that this was to ensure that the electricity market continue to grow and attract investment that will ultimately translate into improved electricity supply in the country.
