FG targets completion of ongoing road projects before 2031

Lagos, June 2026 (TBL Africa) The Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, says the Federal Government is committed to completing all ongoing federal road projects across the country before 2031.

Umahi gave the assurance while inspecting ongoing road projects on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the Sagamu-Ore-Benin corridor.

He inspected the projects alongside members of the National Assembly.

The minister said a 24-kilometre section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Phase II project, leading to the Sagamu Interchange, had been fully completed.

According to him, work is also progressing on a 96-kilometre dual carriageway stretching towards the Benin-Ore junction, with about 70 per cent of the project already completed.

He said: “We have a continuous 60-kilometre dual carriageway on the Sagamu-Ore-Benin Road, and technically about 75 per cent of the project has been completed with reinforced concrete pavement.”

Umahi commended the contractor, CBC Global Civil and Building Construction Nig. Ltd., for the quality and pace of work, noting that additional 70km of drainage infrastructure had been introduced to protect the road.

He said the current administration had completed sections of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway inherited from previous governments while continuing work on other critical national road projects.

The minister outlined several ongoing projects, including the Benin-Asaba Road under a concession arrangement, Asaba-Summit Junction rehabilitation, and bypasses linking the first and second Niger Bridges.

According to him, the road network under construction will provide seamless connectivity from Lagos through Ibadan, Benin, Asaba and parts of the South-East, South-South and North-Central regions.

Umahi attributed the progress recorded on the projects to the support of President Bola Tinubu, and appealed to Nigerians to acknowledge ongoing infrastructure development across the country.

He also said improved road infrastructure was contributing to efforts to tackle insecurity by reducing the number of isolated and dilapidated road corridors often exploited by criminal elements.

The Chairman, House Committee on Works, Mr Akin Alabi, commended the quality of work executed by CBC, describing the project as having “top quality”.

Alabi said journalists accompanying the inspection team had witnessed firsthand, the scale of work being undertaken on several federal road projects.

“We have been to the coastal road, the Epe-Ijebu Ode Road and several other projects. The quality of work is excellent, and what has been achieved so far is impressive,” he said.

He urged the media to continue informing Nigerians about ongoing infrastructure projects and their benefits to the economy.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Works, Sen. Allwell Onyesoh, praised the minister’s commitment to infrastructure delivery in spite of limited resources.

Onyesoh said the National Assembly would continue to support the Federal Government’s efforts to improve road infrastructure nationwide.

He also commended contractors handling the projects for dedication and professionalism.

According to him, the impact of ongoing infrastructure investments on the nation’s economy cannot be over-emphasised.

The lawmakers reiterated their support for President Tinubu’s infrastructure agenda, and pledged continued legislative backing for the successful completion of critical road projects across the country.
