Lagos task force begins enforcement at Alaba Rago after 72-hour ultimatum
Lagos, June 2026 (TBL Africa) The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Task force) has begun enforcement at Alaba Rago following the expiration of a 72-hour ultimatum issued to illegal traders and occupants in the area.
The Chairman of the Lagos State Task force, CSP Adetayo Akerele, disclosed this in a statement signed by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs, Mr Abdulraheem Gbadeyan, on Monday in Lagos.
Akerele said that the enforcement exercise which began on Monday targeted illegal street trading, makeshift structures, and obstructions on highways, walkways, medians and road setbacks, as well as other activities that contravene the state’s environmental laws.
“The exercise was aimed at restoring order, improving public safety, enhancing traffic flow and addressing persistent environmental concerns along the strategic Lagos–Badagry corridor.
“The operation was being carried out in collaboration with relevant enforcement agencies and would be sustained to ensure compliance with the state’s environmental regulations, ” he said.
The task force boss said that the agency had earlier sensitised traders and other occupants within the axis, urging them to voluntarily vacate prohibited locations before the expiration of the 72-hour notice.
He said the enforcement became necessary following persistent complaints from motorists, residents, pedestrians and environmental stakeholders over indiscriminate trading, traffic obstruction, environmental degradation and security concerns associated with activities along the corridor.
Akerele reiterated the commitment of the Lagos State Government to enforcing environmental laws, protecting public infrastructure and maintaining the standards expected of a modern megacity.
He warned that goods displayed on road setbacks, walkways and medians, as well as illegal structures obstructing public spaces, would be removed in line with existing laws.
The chairman urged members of the public, particularly traders and residents, to cooperate with the government by complying with environmental regulations and refraining from activities capable of obstructing traffic or endangering public safety.
He said that the enforcement operation was conducted under the supervision of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources as part of ongoing efforts to maintain a cleaner, safer and more orderly Lagos.
