TCN upgrades Alausa substation, adds 70MVA capacity, targets 70,000 consumers
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commissioned a new 1x100MVA, 132/33kV power transformer at its Alausa Transmission Substation in Lagos, raising the facility’s total capacity from 135MVA to 205MVA.
The TCN Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, disclosed this on Tuesday at the commissioning of the transformer, describing the project as part of ongoing efforts by the Federal Government and TCN to strengthen Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure and improve electricity supply.
The new transformer replaces the substation’s existing 1x30MVA, 132/33kV transformer, representing a 70MVA increase in capacity.
According to Abdulaziz, the upgrade would significantly improve the substation’s ability to accommodate growing electricity demand in Alausa and adjoining communities.
He said the project, executed by Messrs Shanghai Electric Ltd under a World Bank-funded initiative that commenced in January 2021, would, upon energisation, provide more stable and reliable electricity to at least 70,000 residents through the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company.
Beyond improving electricity supply to consumers in the immediate area, the TCN boss said the project would increase the quantum of bulk electricity that could be transmitted to distribution load centres.
He explained that the upgrade would strengthen grid stability while enabling more bulk power to reach distribution companies for onward supply to consumers within their franchise areas.
“This is a clear demonstration that TCN remains resolute in its mandate of building and sustaining a robust transmission network, capable of transporting Nigeria’s growing power needs to various distribution load centres nationwide,” Abdulaziz said.
The TCN Chief Executive linked the project to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, while commending the Minister of Power for what he described as “visionary leadership and guidance” towards achieving steady progress in the power sector.
He expressed appreciation to President Tinubu, the Minister of Power, the World Bank, Lagos State Government, contractors, engineers and other stakeholders for their contributions to the successful completion of the project.
The Alausa upgrade comes as part of broader efforts by TCN to expand transmission capacity, improve grid reliability and address infrastructure constraints affecting the delivery of available generation to distribution companies and electricity consumers.
