NISO restores grid stability after multiple transmission line trippings

***** System operator says incident affected only part of the national grid, dismisses reports of total grid collapse

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has restored normal operations on the national electricity grid following multiple trippings on the 330-kilovolt (kV) transmission network on Monday, October 19, 2026.

NISO said the incident occurred at approximately 12:40 p.m., prompting the immediate implementation of corrective measures in collaboration with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to stabilise the power system and restore normal operations.

In a statement, the system operator confirmed that restoration efforts had been successfully completed and that the national grid had returned to normal operation.

NISO, however, clarified that the disturbance affected only a section of the grid, countering unverified reports circulating in the media suggesting a more widespread disruption. The operator urged members of the public to disregard misleading information and rely on its official communication channels for accurate and verified updates on developments affecting the national electricity transmission system.

The latest incident highlights the operational challenges associated with maintaining stability across Nigeria’s high-voltage transmission network, which serves as the backbone for electricity transmission from generation plants to distribution companies.
