Ibeju-Lekki council targets electricity restoration in 60 communities

Ibeju-Lekki (Lagos), Oct. 2026 (TBLAfrica) The Chairman, Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State, Mr Abdullahi Sesan-Olowa, says his administration is working to restore electricity to 60 communities.

He spoke at a town hall meeting with residents and stakeholders on Thursday to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The meeting which held at the council secretariat, was organised to identify solutions to some of the challenges confronting the area.
Sesan-Olowa said the initiative was aimed at improving commerce, creating jobs and enabling residents to benefit from the emerging industrial activities along the Ibeju-Lekki corridor.
He expressed regrets that in spite of the emergence of Ibeju-Lekki as an industrial hub, many communities in the area had remained without electricity.
He said improved electricity supply would enable residents to participate more actively in the emerging industrial corridor and create employment opportunities for youths.
The chairman said the council had earlier in the week engaged the Lagos State Commissioner for Energy, Mr Biodun Ogunleye, and officials of the Ministry of Lands and Housing.
According to him, the engagement was aimed at finding solutions to the prolonged power outages and infrastructure deficits affecting communities in the area.
He said the discussions were also intended to enable communities to present solutions to the challenges and align them with existing administrative realities.
Sesan-Olowa said right-of-way challenges identified by the Ministry of Lands and Housing had contributed to delays in expanding power transmission infrastructure.
“Officials explained that property encroachments and delayed land clearance approvals frequently stall the expansion of power transmission lines.
“Through the meeting, the Ministry of Lands and Housing and the Ministry of Energy emphasised that protecting these vital infrastructure corridors is a prerequisite for safely deploying power grids,” he said.
He urged residents and community leaders to cooperate with relevant authorities to remove bottlenecks affecting electricity supply without undermining community interests.
Also speaking, Mr Adebayo Balogun, member of the House of Representatives representing the area, said improved electricity supply would create opportunities for youths.
Balogun said no fewer than 6,000 youths could be engaged in auxiliary services supporting the refinery and other companies operating in the area
