OPay customers panic over purported social media claim on shutdown
Abuja, Aug. 2026 (TBL Africa) Some customers of OPay, a leading Mobile Money Operator (MMO) company have expressed fear over a note circulating on social media alleging the shut down of the company by Sept. 1.
Some of the customers who spoke in Abuja on Monday, said the rumour devastated them forcing them to move their money into other accounts.
Mr Ifeanyi Udodi, an OPay customer and Point of Sale (PoS) operator, said he received the news from a fellow operator and quickly moved part of his money to another of his accounts.
Udodi said that although the company had debunked the information, he would wait for some time before returning his money to the bank.
Ms Halimatu Idris, another customer and a student, said she confirmed from a staff member of the company that the information was fake.
Idris appealed to the company to maintain its promptness in service delivery to customers.
She also called for improved engagement between customers and management of the bank to build trust among customers.
“OPay is fast and reliable but they should engage more with their customers especially face to face to build trust,” she said.
Mrs Agnes Idu, a customer, said that although her money in the bank was insignificant, bank failure was not a good experience for any customer.
However, OPay had dismissed the social media note.
OPay on its official X said it is not going on a break.
“We are here, and we are going nowhere. True OPay users know how to identify our official communications.
“Take a closer look at the viral post and you will spot the red flags. Always verify before you share. Filter the noise,” the company said.
