REA Commissions 505kWp Interconnected Solar Mini-Grid to Power Five Communities in Epe, Lagos
Lagos, Nigeria – The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has commissioned a 505kWp Interconnected Solar Mini-Grid under the Rural Electrification Fund (REF) Interconnected Mini-Grid Acceleration Scheme (IMAS), providing reliable and sustainable electricity to the communities of Odogbawojo, Odoshiwola, Odoayan, Ora, and Ibowon in Epe Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The project was implemented by the REA and co-financed by the European Union and the German Government through GIZ under the Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP). Delivered by A4&T Power Solutions Limited in partnership with Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), the project marks another significant milestone in Nigeria’s drive to expand clean and decentralized energy access to underserved communities.
The 505kWp facility is designed to serve households, small businesses, public institutions, and productive users, boosting economic activities, improving social services, and enhancing the quality of life across the beneficiary communities.
Speaking at the commissioning, the Honourable Minister of Power, Mr. Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, GCON, described the REA’s achievements as a clear demonstration of the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding energy access under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“The scale of what the REA is accomplishing today is remarkable. More than 1,000 mini-grid projects are currently under development across Nigeria. Through the World Bank-supported DARES programme alone, nearly 3.9 million Nigerians now have access to solar home systems. Across the country, REA continues to demonstrate that the energy transition is not merely a policy aspiration but a reality that is transforming lives and communities every day,” the Minister said.
He commended the Managing Director/CEO of REA, Dr. Abba Abubakar Aliyu, his team, and project developers for their contributions to advancing rural electrification across Nigeria.
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, also praised the project, noting that it aligns with the state’s infrastructure and economic development priorities.
“This project demonstrates how effective collaboration between government and the private sector can transform rural communities. Lagos State remains committed to supporting initiatives that expand energy access and promote inclusive economic growth,” the Governor said.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of REA, Dr. Abba Abubakar Aliyu, reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to accelerating rural electrification through innovative financing models and strategic partnerships.
“This commissioning highlights the success of the REF-IMAS framework in attracting private sector participation to deliver sustainable energy solutions. REA remains committed to closing Nigeria’s energy access gap through scalable and impactful interventions,” he stated.
The Head of NESP-GIZ, Mr. Duke Benjamin, emphasized the importance of sustained international cooperation in supporting Nigeria’s clean energy transition.
“This project demonstrates the strength of partnerships in delivering climate-smart and inclusive energy solutions. GIZ is proud to support Nigeria’s efforts to scale decentralized renewable energy systems that improve livelihoods and drive sustainable development,” he said.
Project developer A4&T Power Solutions Limited described the commissioning as a major achievement for indigenous renewable energy development.
“We are proud to have delivered this landmark project, which demonstrates the capacity of Nigerian developers to provide world-class energy solutions that directly benefit communities,” the company stated.
The Managing Director/CEO of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) highlighted the importance of collaboration between distribution companies and renewable energy developers.
“This project underscores the value of strategic partnerships in strengthening electricity distribution networks and improving service reliability. EKEDC remains committed to supporting innovative solutions that expand access and improve customer experience,” he said.
The Chairman of Eredo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) described the project as a transformative intervention for the local economy.
“This initiative will stimulate economic activities, empower small businesses, and improve the overall quality of life of our people. We appreciate REA and all project partners for bringing this development to our communities,” he said.
The Agency noted that the project is part of its broader national electrification portfolio, which includes the Rural Electrification Fund (REF), Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP), Energizing Education Programme (EEP), Energizing Economies Initiative (EEI), Capital Projects Programme, and the Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES) Programme, all aimed at achieving universal energy access in Nigeria.
The REF-IMAS framework continues to serve as a catalyst for scaling private sector-led mini-grid deployment across the country.
The commissioning further reinforces the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding critical infrastructure, promoting inclusive economic growth, and accelerating Nigeria’s clean energy transition under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
