Senator Abiru-Facilitated Epe Mini-Grid Project Commissioned, 5MW Expansion Flagged Off
******Lawmaker Commends Tinubu’s Power Sector Reforms

Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, who represents Lagos East Senatorial District, has described the commissioning of the 504-kilowatt Interconnected Mini-Grid in Epe and the launch of its 5-megawatt expansion project as a major step towards solving the long-standing electricity challenges in Epe Local Government Area.
The project, facilitated by Senator Abiru in partnership with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the European Union, and the German Government through GIZ, was commissioned on Wednesday in Epe, Lagos State.
Represented at the event by former Chief Whip of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Abdulateef Rotimi Abiru, the senator said the project was the result of more than four years of continuous engagement and collaboration with key stakeholders to ensure Epe benefited from the Interconnected Mini-Grid Acceleration Scheme (IMAS).
According to him, the project goes beyond providing electricity. It will boost economic growth, create jobs, support businesses, and improve the quality of life for residents.
“This project is the result of years of commitment, advocacy, and collaboration. We remained focused because we understood the positive impact reliable electricity would have on the people and economy of Epe,” he said.
Senator Abiru explained that the 504kW mini-grid is the first phase of a larger intervention. The planned 5MW expansion will significantly increase electricity supply and support the growing economic activities across Epe Division.
He noted that the expanded project will benefit businesses, agro-processors, fish traders, artisans, schools, healthcare facilities, and thousands of small and medium-sized enterprises that have struggled with inadequate power supply.
The senator praised the REA, the European Union, and GIZ for partnering to deliver the project, describing the collaboration as a strong example of sustainable development.
Abiru also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for its reforms in the power sector, saying the Renewed Hope Agenda has created a more favourable environment for investments in critical infrastructure.
According to him, the Federal Government’s efforts to expand electricity access, strengthen power infrastructure, and support innovative energy solutions are already producing positive results across the country.
“What we are seeing today shows how government policies can directly improve the lives of citizens. President Tinubu’s reforms are helping communities gain access to infrastructure that supports growth and development,” he said.
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions reaffirmed his commitment to attracting projects and initiatives that improve the lives of constituents and create economic opportunities across Lagos East.
He also urged residents to protect public infrastructure and continue supporting policies that promote development. He called on Nigerians to sustain their support for President Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“The progress we are witnessing today is the result of purposeful leadership, strategic investments, and continuity in governance. We must continue to support policies and leaders that deliver measurable benefits for the people,” he added.
Among the dignitaries present at the event were the Honourable Minister of Power, Mr. Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe; Managing Director/CEO of the Rural Electrification Agency, Dr. Abba Aliyu; Head of Section, Green and Digital Economy, European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ms. Inga Stefanowicz; Head of Development Cooperation, German Embassy, Ms. Karin Jansen; Cluster Coordinator, GIZ Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr. Duke Benjamin; traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community representatives from Epe Division.
