Grimaldi clarifies reports on container sale transaction

Lagos, June 2026 (TBL Africa) Grimaldi Agency Nigeria has clarified reports on sale of empty shipping containers by Grimaldi Deep Sea S.p.A., saying the transaction was conducted with agreed contractual terms and does not transfer customs duty obligations to the seller.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the agency said some media reports on the matter were inaccurate and did not reflect the terms governing the transaction.

It also refuted claims that about 2,500 empty containers were involved in the sale, saying the figure were incorrect and not supported by verified records.

According to the agency, only a limited number of empty containers were sold, contrary to reports suggesting a large-scale disposal.

Grimaldi explained that the containers were sold under their international customs status, commonly referred to as “foreign customs position”, meaning they remained under temporary import classification.

It added that the containers were not transferred as domesticated assets and were not intended for permanent use within Nigeria.

The agency stated that the buyer was fully informed of these conditions before the completion of the transaction, with all terms clearly documented in the sale agreement.

It said the invoice clearly outlined the customs status and responsibilities of each party, adding that liability for customs duties and domestication processes rests with the buyer in accordance with the agreed terms.

Grimaldi urged media organisations and stakeholders to verify information before publication to ensure accuracy in reporting its operations.

A maritime trade consultant, Mr Okey Ibeke, had on Monday called on the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to review the planned disposal of more than 2,500 empty shipping containers reportedly linked to Grimaldi Nigeria.

He said such a review would ensure compliance with customs procedures governing temporary importation and the conversion of shipping containers for local use.
