Trailer Collision: LASTMA confirms dispatch rider’s death

Lagos, May 2026 (TBL Africa) The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the death of a commercial dispatch rider in a collision at Ilupeju Bypass, Lagos.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, in a statement on Wednesday said preliminary investigations showed the rider struggled for right of way with a commercial minibus, popularly called ‘Korope’.

He explained that the rider subsequently lost control of the motorcycle and crashed into a moving containerised trailer along the bypass.

“The impact of the collision resulted in severe injuries that led to the instantaneous death of the rider at the scene,” he said.

Bakare-Oki stated that LASTMA operatives responded immediately after receiving distress calls from road users and other emergency responders.

He said officials recovered the remains of the deceased, which had become trapped beneath the articulated trailer after the fatal collision.

According to him, traffic officers also began traffic control operations to reduce congestion and maintain vehicular movement along the busy corridor.

“Officials of the State Environmental Health Management Unit were also contacted and promptly evacuated the corpse,” Bakare-Oki added.

He noted that LASTMA personnel collaborated with emergency responders to ensure safety, security and orderliness during the rescue and evacuation exercise.

Bakare-Oki further disclosed that the damaged motorcycle and the containerised trailer had been handed over to the police for investigations.

He added that the police would determine possible prosecution arising from the fatal accident and other circumstances surrounding the incident.

“Security operatives from the Ilupeju Police Division provided adequate security at the scene,” he said.

The LASTMA boss sympathised with the family of the deceased and urged motorists and riders to avoid reckless competition for right of way.

He stressed the importance of caution, patience and strict compliance with traffic regulations on Lagos roads to prevent avoidable fatalities.

Bakare-Oki said LASTMA recently engaged dispatch riders and other stakeholders on safety awareness and responsible road usage across the state.

According to him, the engagement focused on compliance with speed limits, traffic regulations and measures aimed at reducing road accidents and deaths.

He reiterated the agency’s commitment to safer roads through sustained enforcement, public enlightenment campaigns and collaboration with relevant transport stakeholders.
