U.S. Flags fly at half-staff in Kansas, Tennessee to honour fallen first responders

Flags across parts of the United States have been lowered to half-staff in honour of two first responders who died in the line of duty, as state authorities in Kansas and Tennessee observe separate memorial tributes.

In Kansas, Governor Laura Kelly ordered flags to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on April 17 in memory of firefighter and former deputy sheriff Carl “Levi” Evans.

According to officials, Evans died after suffering a medical emergency during a training exercise. Authorities described him as a dedicated public servant who had committed his life to protecting his community through both law enforcement and firefighting roles.

“The loss of a first responder is always a tragedy,” Governor Kelly said, extending condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.

In Tennessee, a similar observance was declared by Governor Bill Lee to honour Hamilton County Deputy Sheriff Landon Faulkner, who died on April 10 from injuries sustained in a road accident.

Under the state’s Honouring Hometown Heroes Act, flags at the State Capitol and all government buildings were lowered for the day in recognition of Faulkner’s service and sacrifice.

Family members and local authorities described Faulkner as a devoted officer and public servant who died while fulfilling his duty. His funeral and memorial services are scheduled to take place in Dunlap, Tennessee.

Tributes have highlighted his commitment to service, with reports noting that he also donated his organs after his death, continuing his legacy of helping others.

The observances underscore the continued recognition of the sacrifices made by emergency responders across the United States, with both states marking the day as a moment of reflection and gratitude for those who serve on the front lines.
