Stock market opens week bearish, declines by N984bn
Lagos, June 2026 (TBL Africa ) Trading on the Nigerian stock market opened the week on a bearish note on Monday, with investors losing N984 billion.
This is due to widespread profit-taking, particularly in financial stocks, which dragged the market lower.
The downturn saw the Nigerian Exchange Ltd. (NGX) market capitalisation decline by 0.63 per cent, dropping from N156.969 trillion recorded on Friday to N155.985 trillion.
Similarly, the All-Share Index (ASI) shed 1,534.01 points, or 0.63 per cent, to close at 243,204.73, compared with 244,738.74 in the previous session.
As a result, the market’s year-to-date return moderated to 56.29 per cent.
Market sentiment remained weak, as reflected in the market breadth, which closed negative with 48 decliners against 17 advancers.
International Energy Insurance led the losers’ chart by 9.99 per cent, ending the session at N6.40.
E-Tranzact followed by 9.97 per cent, finishing at N14.90 while Neimeth Pharmaceuticals shed by 9.94 per cent, settling at N7.70 per share.
Also, Oando decreased by 9.81 per cent, closing at N47.80 and Abbey Mortgage Bank dipped by 9.63 per cent, finishing at N10.30 per share.
Conversely, Royal Exchange led the gainers’ chart by 10 per cent, closing at N1.65.
Ikeja Hotel followed by 9.97 per cent, settling at N47.45 and Consolidated Hallmark advanced by 9.58 per cent, finishing at N9.04 per share.
Similarly, University Press grew by 9.09 per cent, ending the session at N6 while AXA Mansard increased by 8.73 per cent, closing at N13.70 per share.
A total of 569.07 million shares worth N31.44 billion were traded across 77,652 transactions, compared to 1.7 billion shares valued at N52.8 billion that was exchanged in 49,807 earlier on Friday.
Meanwhile, Sterling Nigeria emerged as the most actively traded stock by volume, accounting for 112.17 million shares or 15.06 per cent of the total volume traded.
Aradel led the value chart with transactions worth N11.20 billion, representing 30.76 per cent of the day’s total turnover.
