Senegal moves to reverse CAF’s stripping of AFCON title

Senegal on Wednesday, formerly submitted its protest with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) appealing the decision of the Confederation of African Football (CAF’s) decision to strip it of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.

CAF Appeals Board had on March 17, held that Senegal Senegal breached Articles 82 and 84 of the AFCON regulations after several of its players walked off the pitch to their dressing room in protest of a referee’s decision.

For this reason, the country was stripped of the 2025 AFCON title and handed over to Morocco, the host country and the silver medalists in the tournament – a decision that immediately sparked off a lot of controversies.

In a statement on Monday, CAS, said the Senegalese FA was seeking to overturn the Appeals Board’s verdict and have the Teranga Lions declared champions of Africa.

Stressing that Darker also “requests an immediate suspension of the time limit to submit an appeal brief until the CAF decision is notified with full grounds,” it that a panel would be appointed to look into the case.

The statement, said: “A CAS Arbitral Panel will be appointed to consider this matter. Following this, a procedural calendar will be established. In accordance with CAS procedural rules, an Appellant has twenty days to file an appeal brief with legal arguments, and the Respondents then have a further twenty days to submit an answer containing a statement of defence.

“At this early stage of proceedings and considering the FSF request to suspend deadlines, it is not possible to anticipate a procedural timeline and to indicate when a hearing will be scheduled.”

CAS said it will ensure that the “arbitration proceedings are conducted as swiftly as possible, while respecting the right of all parties to a fair hearing.”
