NSE partners Greenville LNG to promote CNG adoption

Kano, Sept.  2026(TBL  Africa ) The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Kano Branch, is partnering with Greenville LNG to promote the adoption of Compressed Natural Gass (CNG) across Nigeria.

The partnership aims to promote Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a cleaner, cheaper and sustainable alternative to conventional fuels for transportation.

The collaboration was unveiled on Saturday in Kano during the branch’s Annual Memorial Lecture in honour of late Salihi Illiasu (a seasoned Engineer) and the induction of 40 new corporate members.

The lecture is themed: “Compressed Natural Gas as Transition Fuel: Engineering Insight, Economics and Environmental Impact.”

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of NSE Kano Branch, Alhaji Lawan Umar, said the theme was particularly relevant to Nigeria’s current economic and environmental challenges.

Umar, who described CNG as a practical alternative to conventional transportation fuels, said its adoption would help address the rising cost of transportation while contributing to environmental sustainability.

He said the lecture, titled: “CNG for Transportation: Engineering Solutions for Cleaner and Affordable Mobility,” provided an opportunity for engineers and other stakeholders to examine practical solutions to the country’s energy and transportation challenges.

“CNG speaks directly to our engineering responsibility to design for affordability and sustainability, while considering the lifestyle and economic realities of Nigerians.

“These are issues that go beyond theory and speak to real economic relief for the ordinary Nigerian commuter and transporter,” he said.

The chairman also paid tribute to late Salihi Illiasu, describing him as one of the early indigenous engineers whose vision and dedication contributed to the development of the engineering profession in Nigeria.

According to him, Illiasu’s contributions helped to open opportunities for succeeding generations of engineers.

Umar said the memorial lecture was, therefore, organised to celebrate the late engineer’s contributions and preserve his legacy within the profession.

The Keynote Speaker, Nurudeen Salahudeen, said Greenville LNG was working toward establishing 70 CNG stations across Nigeria by 2027.

Salahudeen said the planned expansion was aimed at improving access to CNG and supporting the development of cleaner and more affordable transportation fuel alternatives in the country.

He said increased availability of CNG infrastructure would be critical to encouraging its adoption in the transportation sector.

The late Illiasu was posthumously honoured by the NSE, Kano Branch, for his distinguished contributions and service to the engineering profession.

The annual memorial lecture brought together engineers, professionals and other stakeholders to deliberate on the role of engineering in addressing Nigeria’s energy, transportation and environmental challenges.
