NITDA tasks journalists on digital , data journalism
Lagos, Sept. 2026 (TBL Africa) The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) on Wednesday urged journalists to strengthen digital and data journalism to promote transparency, public trust and national development.
The Director-General, NITDA Malam Kashifu Inuwa, made the call in his goodwill message to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Lagos Chapel, 2026 Annual Strategic Public Lecture and Symposium.
The Symposium had as its theme: ‘’2027 and Nigeria’s Future: Impact of Politics on Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Industry and Economy – The Role of Media’’.
The D-G was represented by Dr Deborah Dada of the Media and Cooperate Affairs Unit.
He said the growing influence of digital technology, data governance and Artificial Intelligence (AI) was making responsible journalism increasingly critical to Nigeria’s development.
Inuwa said newsmen remained custodians of public truth, noting that inaccurate information and speculative reports could destabilise markets and erode public confidence.
According to him, they should harness digital platforms ethically while applying rigorous fact-checking and maintaining professional standards.
He said NITDA was committed to partnering with the media to enhance digital literacy and build journalists’ capacity in investigative and data-driven reporting.
The D-G said the agency would also support technological solutions capable of strengthening Nigeria’s information ecosystem.
Inuwa said the digital economy was increasingly becoming critical infrastructure for transparency, efficiency and growth across sectors, including energy and finance.
He commended the NUJ and the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) for creating platforms for intellectual engagement and professional development.
The DG expressed optimism that discussions at the event would produce recommendations capable of strengthening democratic institutions and promoting economic resilience.
He said such collaboration would also contribute to Nigeria’s transition to a digital and knowledge-driven economy.
