LASWA seizes 120 damaged life jackets
Lagos, May 2026 (TBL Africa) The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has confiscated and removed 120 damaged life jackets from ferry terminals and jetties during routine safety inspections.
The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Blue Economy, Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, confirmed this in a statement on Friday.
Emmanuel said the safety inspection was to enforce strict compliance with waterways safety regulations and raise operational standards.
He said: “The inspection campaign covered several terminals and jetties, including Ipakodo, Bayeku, Ijede, Ebute-Ero, Liverpool, Sabokoji, Alex focusing on boat seaworthiness and life jacket compliance.
“During the exercise, 120 damaged life jackets were seized and removed from circulation.”
He added that the authority took immediate action to eliminate hazardous items and ensure strict adherence to safety standards across waterways operations.
Emmanuel identified inconsistent compliance among operators. He said while many vessels met safety requirements, some required repairs to achieve full seaworthiness.
“Strict enforcement of safety protocols, especially vessel conditions and life jacket quality, is non-negotiable,” he said.
According to the LASWA boss, enforcement actions will continue at all terminals to ensure full compliance with safety regulations.
He added that operators were legally required to maintain seaworthy vessels and provide certified functioning life jackets for passengers.
