FG adds 640MW transmission capacity, commissions Kankia substation

The Federal Government has commissioned six transmission substations in Kano and Katsina states, adding 640 megawatts (MW) of transmission capacity to the national grid within a week.

The projects, executed through the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), are aimed at strengthening electricity transmission and improving power supply across the country.

On Wednesday, the government commissioned four transmission substations at Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata and Dan-Agundi in Kano State, adding 544MW of transmission capacity.

On Friday, it commissioned two new 60MVA, 132/33kV transmission substations in Kankia Local Government Area of Katsina State, contributing an additional 96MW to the national grid.

Speaking at the commissioning in Katsina, the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, commended President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to reforming the power sector.

Tegbe said the investments aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda, which recognised reliable infrastructure as essential for economic growth.

“By supporting vital investments such as this, the administration is laying stronger foundations for enterprise, employment and prosperity across every part of the country,” he said.

The minister said the new facility would strengthen the transmission network’s capacity to deliver available electricity across Katsina State and neighbouring communities, supporting commercial activities and improving household welfare.

He urged residents to protect the infrastructure and report suspicious activities to TCN or security agencies.

“These assets serve your businesses, your neighbours and your children; safeguarding them protects your community’s future,” he said.

In his remarks, Gov. Dikko Umaru Radda of Katsina State described the project as a major investment in the state’s electricity infrastructure.

Radda said reliable electricity would promote economic growth, industrial development and improved public service delivery.

He thanked Tinubu for approving the project and commended the Federal Ministry of Power and TCN for their roles in its completion.

The commissioning was attended by officials of the Federal Ministry of Power, TCN, Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) and members of the Katsina State Executive Council.
