FAAN clarifies on MMIA fire, says smoke from suppression system
Lagos, Aug. 2026 (TBL Africa) The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has clarified that there was no actual fire at the Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, as it claimed earlier on Sunday.
In a statement it issued, FAAN said that there was rather smoke discharge from the Terminal 2 FM-200 fire suppression system.
The statement was issued by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr Henry Agbebire.
According to the agency, preliminary findings indicated that there was no fire at the terminal.
It said that the smoke observed within the affected area resulted from discharge from the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system.
FAAN, however, said that the reason for activation of the fire suppression system was being investigated.
It said: “Normal operations have since resumed at the terminal, while detailed investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident.
“FAAN appreciates the understanding and cooperation of passengers, airlines, airport users and all stakeholders, and reiterates its commitment to the safety and security of all airport operations.”
The authority had, in a statement earlier on Sunday, said there was a fire at the terminal.
