Egbin Power Plc, Nigeria’s largest thermal power generating station, has resumed electricity generation with an output of 433 megawatts (MW) as of Wednesday morning, following a temporary shutdown to carry out maintenance on its cooling system.
Mr Felix Ofulue, Head of Corporate Communications at Egbin Power Plc, confirmed the development in an interview, stating that operations had stabilised and all available units were working optimally.
According to Ofulue, the maintenance exercise was necessary to ensure efficient performance of the plant’s cooling infrastructure and sustain reliable electricity generation to the national grid.
“Operations have resumed and the units are working optimally. As of Wednesday morning, the plant was generating 433 megawatts to the national grid,” he said.
He explained that engineers and technical personnel successfully completed the maintenance work on the cooling system, paving the way for the gradual restoration of generation across the plant’s units.
Industry stakeholders had expressed concern over the temporary shutdown because of Egbin Power’s strategic role in Nigeria’s electricity supply network.
Located in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State, Egbin Power Plant has an installed capacity of 1,320MW with six generating units of 220MW each, making it the largest power generation station in Nigeria.
The restoration of 433MW to the national grid is expected to improve electricity supply stability across the country, especially amid rising energy demand.
Power sector analysts noted that the return of the plant’s generation capacity would provide significant support to the nation’s electricity grid while efforts continue to optimise generation output.
Meanwhile, Ofulue reiterated the company’s commitment to operational excellence, efficiency and adherence to global maintenance and safety standards in its operations.
