African Union to unveil African Credit Rating Agency on Sept 7
Lagos, Sept. 2026 – The African Union (AU) is to inaugurate the African Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA) on October 7, 2026.
It will be inaugurated in Port Louis, Mauritius, where it’s headquarter is located.
The AU announced this on its official X handle on Wednesday.
It described the development as a landmark initiative aimed at providing a more context-driven assessment of African economies and businesses.
The AU said the inauguration of AfCRA would be a major step in strengthening Africa’s financial sovereignty and addressing concerns over how the continent’s credit risk is assessed globally.
“The African Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA), headquartered in Mauritius, is created to rewrite that narrative with context-driven credit opinions for sovereign and corporate entities.
“For decades, skewed risk perceptions have forced African nations to pay an unfair ‘risk premium’ on global capital.
“AfCRA is our response. A bold assertion of African agency, financial sovereignty and institutional confidence.
“It is a powerful answer to the pessimism that too often defines perceptions of Africa,” the AU said.
