FCCPC cracks down on substandard goods across North -West markets
Kano, June 2026 (TBL Africa) The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) says it has intensified surveillance operations in markets, supermarkets, eateries, and other business outlets to protect consumers from harmful products and unfair business practices.
The North-West Zonal Coordinator of the Commission, Alhaji Hassan Shamaki, disclosed this in an interview on Thursday in Kano.
Shamaki said the surveillance operations were aimed at protecting unsuspecting consumers from fake, substandard, and expired products.
He said: “Any fake and expired products discovered during inspections are immediately removed from circulation.
“Consumer protection remains our priority. We conduct regular surveillance in markets and business premises,” he said.
The Zonal coordinator said the commission had handled complaints from several sectors, particularly banking and service-related industries, and resolved over 200 cases within six months.
“Many consumers have obtained redress through our intervention. Only a few cases are still undergoing resolution,” he said.
Shamaki added that the commission had intensified its crackdown on fake, expired, and substandard products in markets across the region.
The zonal coordinator further explained that the commission had inspected more than 30 supermarkets and eateries to ensure compliance with consumer protection regulations.
He added that they had reached out to more than 40 schools, government and public markets, and media organisations across the state.
“We also create awareness on consumer rights and responsibilities to protect them against exploitation,” he said.
He advised manufacturers and business operators to maintain transparency and desist from recycling expired products, warning that offenders would face regulatory action.
Shamaki disclosed that they planned to create awareness on electricity by engaging relevant stakeholders, enlightening them, and urging them to forward their complaints for quick resolution.
He encouraged consumers to report any kind of violation and not to suffer in silence.
