Lagos NLC council demands retirement reform
Lagos, May 2026 (TBL Africa) The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Lagos Council, has urged the state government to approve retirement at 65 years or after 40 years’ service.
Council chairperson, Funmi Sessi, made the appeal on Friday during the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration in Lagos.
“In America, retirement age is 67, while the United Kingdom retires workers at 66.
“The retirement extension (in Nigeria) already has legal backing, passed by the National Assembly and signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“The Federal Government has implemented the law, while states may domesticate it according to their administrative needs.
“More than 20 states have already adopted the policy for teachers, but Lagos is yet to act.
“We urge government to formally extend retirement for teachers and other workers without further delay.
“The Annual Merit Award for Teachers has remained suspended since 2022, in spite of its motivational value.
“Its restoration will revive excellence, innovation, healthy competition, and professional growth among teachers,” she said.
Sessi also requested Non-academic Staff Union (NASU) representation on education boards covering primary, secondary, and other state institutions.
“Exited non-teaching staff in schools should be replaced after retirement, conversion, or service withdrawal.
“Staff buses, the promised 20 per cent salary increase, and unpaid allowances should be implemented,” Sessi added.
She specifically demanded payment of 22 months’ hazard and transport arrears owed NASU staff in Ijanikin and Ojo.
Sessi urged Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to address workers’ demands and strengthen labour relations across Lagos.
“The Lagos NLC remains committed to workers’ welfare, industrial peace, and sustainable development
“Together, we will continue moving Lagos State forward through constructive engagement,” she added.
