Adelabu moves to quit power ministry after Tinubu talks, eyes Oyo Governorship run
Chief Adebayo Adelabu, Minister of Power, has formally informed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of his intention to resign from office before the end of the week to focus on his gubernatorial ambition in Oyo State.
The disclosure was contained in a statement issued by Tunji Bolaji, Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations to the Minister of Power and obtained by Advisors Reports on Wednesday.
According to the statement, Adelabu met with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday, where he presented a comprehensive account of his stewardship in the power sector over the past two and a half years.
During the meeting, the Minister highlighted key achievements under his leadership, including efforts to stabilise electricity generation, strengthen transmission infrastructure, and implement reforms aimed at improving efficiency and service delivery across the power value chain.
A major highlight of the briefing was the presentation of the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP), alongside its Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP), as well as the Medium- to Long-Term Integrated Resource Plan for the power sector—frameworks designed to guide succession and ensure sustainability.
The NIEP outlines a long-term roadmap for achieving energy security, expanding electricity access, integrating renewable energy, and building a more resilient power sector. Its accompanying SIP provides the execution framework, detailing priority actions, timelines, and institutional responsibilities across generation, transmission, and distribution, while also addressing regulatory reforms, investment mobilisation, and capacity development.
President Tinubu commended the Minister for his contributions and the policy groundwork laid for sectoral transformation, and granted his consent for Adelabu to pursue his governorship ambition.
Adelabu is expected to tender his resignation imminently, with the timing aimed at ensuring continuity in ongoing reforms and addressing critical sector challenges before his exit.
These include recent declines in power generation linked to gas supply constraints, pipeline maintenance issues, and outstanding obligations to gas suppliers.
The Minister expressed appreciation to the President for his support and reaffirmed his commitment to the continued development of Nigeria’s power sector and the broader economy.
