SAHARA Group foundation extends recycling, creates opportunities in Jigawa and Kaduna
Sahara Group Foundation has commissioned two new Sahara Go Recycling Hubs in Jigawa and Kaduna States, expanding access to organised waste management and creating economic opportunities for communities in Northern Nigeria.
The new hubs, located at Gidan Hakimi in Shuwarin Local Government Area of Jigawa State and Asharami Retail Station, Badiko, Kaduna South Local Government Area of Kaduna State, are the Foundation’s 21st and 22nd recycling hubs nationwide and its second and third in Northern Nigeria. They were commissioned on Tuesday, 14 July and Wednesday, 15 July 2026, respectively.
The Jigawa hub was established in partnership with the King’s Council, Shuwarin, while the Kaduna hub was delivered in collaboration with Sahara Group’s downstream business, Asharami Synergy.
The initiative enables households to exchange recyclable waste for income while promoting cleaner communities, in line with Sahara Group’s commitment to sustainable, community-driven development.
Director of Sahara Group Foundation, Chidilim Menakaya, said the new hubs demonstrate the Foundation’s commitment to expanding practical environmental solutions through partnerships.
“By working with institutions and sister companies that understand local needs, we are building recycling systems that communities can own, sustain and benefit from over the long term,” she said.
The commissioning ceremonies were attended by members of the King’s Council; the Jigawa State Commissioner for Environment, Dr Nura I. Doka; Chairman of Shuwarin Local Government Area, Hon. Abdulhamid Ibrahim Balago, and the Vice Chairman; community leaders and residents in Jigawa; as well as Asharami Synergy officials and the Filling Station Manager in Kaduna.
Speaking at the Jigawa ceremony, Alhaji Bashir Abdullahi, Sarkin Gabas and Hakimin Shuwarin, said the recycling hub addresses a longstanding challenge in the community.
“For years, our people had no organised way to manage waste other than burning or dumping it. This hub provides a cleaner environment while creating opportunities for young people and women to earn income from recyclable materials,” he said.
At the Kaduna event, Aliyu Abdullahi Mabai, Filling Station Manager, Asharami Retail Station, Badiko, described the hub as a valuable addition to the station’s role in the community.
“We are pleased to host this recycling hub. It gives our customers and neighbours an easy way to recycle and reflects Asharami Synergy’s commitment to responsible business and environmental sustainability,” he said.
The Foundation also announced plans to commission another recycling hub in Kano State in the coming weeks. The expansion follows recent engagement with the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, who expressed strong support for the initiative.
Since its launch, the Sahara Go Recycling programme has facilitated the recycling of more than 1,000 tonnes of waste materials and directly or indirectly supported over 2,000 livelihoods across Nigeria.
