Nigeria summons S/Africa’s envoy over protests against foreigners

Abuja, May 2026 (TBL Africa) Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has extended an invitation to the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa for a meeting scheduled to take place on Monday, May 4, at the Ministry.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday by Kimiebi Ebienfa,
the ministry’s Spokesperson.
According to him, the meeting is to formally convey Nigeria’s profound concern regarding recent events that have the potential to impact the cordial relations between Nigeria and South Africa.
Ebienfa said the meeting would primarily focus on the ongoing demonstrations by various groups within South Africa, documented instances of mistreatment of Nigerian citizens and attacks on their businesses.
“The Ministry is aware of the growing discontent among Nigerians concerning the treatment of their nationals in South Africa.
“Nevertheless, the ministry implores the Nigerian public to remain calm and reiterates the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting the rights and well-being of Nigerian citizens residing in South Africa,” he quoted the minister as saying.
