Traffic violation: Human rights advocates not above the Law – Lagos taskforce

Lagos, March 2026 (TBL Africa) The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit (Taskforce) says no individual, regardless of status or affiliation, is above the law, dismissing allegations of misconduct involving its officers.

The agency’s spokesperson, Mr Abdulraheem Gbadeyan, on Wednesday night denied online publication claims that officers unlawfully seized a 250cc motorcycle belonging to a human rights advocate.

He said the allegations, shared by an online media platform, claimed that such motorcycles were permitted to operate freely on Lagos roads and accused task force officials of extortion.

According to him, no individual or group is above the law, regardless of their status or affiliations.

“Identifying yourself as a human rights advocate does not confer immunity or exempt you from prosecution for breaking traffic laws or enforcement procedures, ” he said.

The spokesperson clarified that the motorcycle was seized after the rider committed multiple traffic offences.

“The rider drove against traffic along the Cement Bus Stop Inward Ile Zik corridor in Ikeja, Lagos.

“The motorbike, bearing registration number DKA 510 QC, was also said to have been carrying two passengers without helmets at the time of arrest.

“The rider resisted arrest and engaged officers physically, leading to a scuffle during which some officials had their uniforms torn.

“The situation was eventually brought under control, and the motorcycle was impounded, ” Gbadeyan said.

He said that the rider, alongside three associates also identified themselves as human rights activists affiliated with the Nigerian Labour Congress.

“They later approached the Officer-in-Charge of Ikeja, ASP Gamagins Kaffaru, offering a N20,000 bribe to secure the release of the motorcycle.”

The image maker said the alleged offer was rejected, noting that the case had already been processed for prosecution.

The spokesperson also denied accusations of high-handedness, stating that offenders were routinely charged to court in line with due process.

He emphasised that grievances should be addressed through the judiciary rather than through public campaigns or misinformation.

The image maker highlighted the credentials of its chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele, describing him as a trained lawyer, seasoned police officer, and advocate for human rights, committed to upholding fairness and the rule of law.
