NAHCON Chairman seeks digital transformation, strategic partnerships for sustainable Hajj Fund Management

Yusuf advocates investment in hospitality, logistics to reduce pilgrimage costs and preserve benefits for future pilgrims

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, has called for stronger international partnerships and digital transformation to promote sustainable Hajj fund management and improve pilgrimage administration.

Yusuf made the call while participating as a panelist at the 8th International Hajj Fund Forum (IHFF) 2026, hosted by Indonesia’s Hajj Financial Management Agency (Badan Pengelola Keuangan Haji, BPKH), at the Jakarta International Convention Center, Indonesia.

The forum, themed “Sustainable Hajj Fund Management Through Strategic Synergy and Digital Transformation,” brought together policymakers, Islamic finance experts and institutional leaders to discuss strategies for managing Hajj funds amid rising costs, global economic uncertainties and the need to preserve financial benefits for future generations of pilgrims.

Yusuf, who joined BPKH Executive Board Chief Fadlul Imansyah and other international dignitaries on a high-level panel, highlighted the importance of institutional collaboration, technology-driven reforms and prudent investment in strengthening the financial sustainability of Hajj operations.

He said effective Hajj fund management should extend beyond financing the immediate pilgrimage season to protecting funds and creating sustainable benefits for future pilgrims.

“The future of Hajj administration depends on our collective ability to innovate. Managing Hajj funds efficiently is no longer just about financing the immediate next pilgrimage; it is about protecting wealth and ensuring sustainable benefits for future generations of pilgrims,” he said.

According to him, stronger partnerships with international institutions, including Indonesia’s BPKH, could help Nigeria adopt improved financial management practices and digital solutions to enhance transparency, accountability and efficiency in Hajj administration.

Yusuf said NAHCON was committed to positioning Nigeria’s Hajj operations for greater financial sustainability in the interests of both current and future pilgrims.

The NAHCON chairman also highlighted opportunities to expand investments in infrastructure linked to the Hajj value chain, particularly hospitality and logistics.

He said strategic investments in these areas could help reduce accommodation and related pilgrimage costs while generating sustainable returns for the Hajj fund, subject to sound investment management and appropriate oversight.

The forum featured opening addresses by Indonesian Minister of Hajj and Umrah, K.H. Mochamad Irfan Yusuf, and Vice Minister of Finance, Juda Agung.

Participants examined the growing complexities associated with Hajj financing and the role of financial technology, international cooperation and long-term investment strategies in strengthening institutional capacity.

NAHCON’s participation underscored Nigeria’s interest in developing more sustainable, technology-driven approaches to Hajj fund management while strengthening cooperation with international partners.

The commission said such initiatives could support a more transparent and economically sustainable framework for managing pilgrimage resources and improving services for Nigerian pilgrims.
